Flickr deleting your content

A tweet from Dave Gorman appeared in my Twitter feed this morning which concerns me somewhat. He has had his own photo on his Flickr stream deleted because some huge company filed a copyright infringement. Flickr deleted the photo without first investigating whether these claims were correct, and Dave has lost all the comments and links to the photo along with it.

I have sent an email to Flickr about this (which includes a link to Dave's blog with the full story).
Not a problem I'm experiencing, but something about Flickr that concerns me: deleting content when you receive a copyright infringement notification, without investigating first.

See this blog for details: http://gormano.blogspot.com/2012/03/if-this-picture-looks-bit-familiar-it.html

Doesn't really seem in tune with Flickr's aims of getting your photos to the people that matter and finding better ways of organising content.

Surely it would make more sense to hide the content until investigated? Especially when you consider that many Flickr users probably also have Blogger, Wordpress, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, etc. accounts and link to photos. This wouldn't seem the best way to keep your users happy, especially the ones paying for Pro accounts.

And I DO expect an answer why Flickr operates in this way.

Happy International Women's Day!

We've come a long way baby. But there's still a lot to be done.
  • Every minute, a woman dies in pregnancy or childbirth, and another 20-30 suffer serious injury or disability.
  • Unmarried women in Saudi Arabia must remain under male guardianship.
  • Around 10% of women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have been raped, as part of warfare.
  • Female genital mutilation (FGM) is widespread, affecting up to 90% of girls in some countries.
  • Today, 1 in 3 women worldwide will be a victim of violence.
  • 60-70% of the world's poorest people are women.
  • 1 in 7 girls in developing countries are married before they are 15. Almost half are expected to be married by 20.
  • An estimated 60 million girls worldwide are sexually assaulted on their way to school each year, leading to less girls going to school, less education, and thus fewer opportunities.
  • Worldwide, nearly 50% of sexual assaults are against girls 15 and under.
  • The current US Congressional hearing about contraception lacked any female representation on the panel.
  • In the UK, 2 women are killed every week by their partner or former partner.

Unrequited friendship

I feel like I've lost a friend and don't know why. I feel like the more I try to hang on, the more she pushes away. And it makes me really sad because we were so close.

I felt like I'd found someone who I could be really honest and vulnerable with, and I'd never had a friend like that before. She made me appreciate my other friends more than I had been doing too, because she was such a good friend.

I think I was a pretty good friend to her too.

Maybe it was just one-sided. Or maybe the time apart when I was in Newcastle was just too much. I knew I would have to be "replaced" and didn't expect to just slot back in and spend as much time together as we had been doing. But I haven't been able to slot back in at all. Made more difficult by the fact that I'm not in town much.

I started off by calling and texting a fair bit, but now I don't bother. There's only so many unreturned calls and texts you can take without damaging your self-esteem.

Friends come and go. But it's really shit when the ones you think will be around for ages slip away.
